Robert J. Hall Heart Sounds
& Murmurs Laboratory
Welcome to the Robert J. Hall Heart Sounds and Murmurs
Laboratory website. The Heart Sounds Lab is under the direction
of James M. Wilson, MD and is located in the Texas Heart Institute,
Houston, Texas, USA.
This website provides educational material regarding auscultation of the
heart for the medical student, nurse, intern, resident, and cardiologist. The
Heart Sounds Lab and this website are made possible through generous
monetary donations made to the Robert J. Hall Endowed Chair.
On July 10, 1973 the Heart Sounds Research Lab was created under the
direction of Robert J. Hall, MD and Carlos C. Martin. Its main purpose was to
record, for teaching and research purposes, the heart murmurs and
abnormal heart sounds that characterized the great variety of illnesses of the
numerous patients who came to the Texas Heart Institute for diagnosis and

"In the physical examination of the heart, the old adage, 'you only see what you look
for' holds true with modification to, 'you only hear what you listen for.' Although a
very experienced clinician may listen to a polyglot of noises, compare them to an
internal matrix and make a correct diagnosis with, 'that sounds like...,' for us mere
mortals, proper auscultation requires that you listen carefully and thoughtfully to
one thing at a time."
